Tropical Storm Irene in Pointe-Claire 2011 - Monday, September 05, 2011

Tropical Storm Irene in Pointe-Claire 2011 - Monday, September 05, 2011

"" My husband suffered a heart attack before Irene struck. A retired firefighter/first responder, he was back home, convalescing, when we lost power.

I tried to manage bailing out the water in our basement on my own, all the while reassuring him I had everything under control.

But after two hours I went upstairs and told him that I couldn't manage anymore and that I'd have to let the basement flood. I called Pointe Claire Public Works, knowing that on a Sunday evening no one would be there. The answering-machine message told me that in an emergency I could call the Pointe Claire Volunteer Rescue Unit. I did.

Shortly after, the rescue truck appeared in front of my house and three young, extremely polite, calm men came into my house and quickly and efficiently assessed the situation. They hooked up my sump pump to their truck's generator and drained off the overflow. One delightful young man stayed in my basement while his partners searched the neighbourhood to check culverts and ditches to resolve potential problems. Several neighbours, seeing their truck, approached them seeking help for their flooding basements. These volunteers did not tell them that they had come for one specific problem, but immediately set about helping them, too. They were efficient, reassuring, pleasant young men. I expressed my gratitude to them and they were completely nonchalant about their heroics.

My husband felt so helpless being the victim of a situation in which he had always been the hero. He and I both were so very impressed with the rescuers of the Pointe Claire Volunteer Rescue Unit.

Hi Jim
I would like to thank-you and all the first responders that were at our tournament this weekend.  All their help was greatly appreciated and at times they were kept quite busy with some of the injuries.

We were VERY impressed with PCVRU and so was the borough. They have your web page as well as the police...I can't speak about next year as I think I am retiring from the race after 20 years of volunteering for the event. My track team of 60 is enough of a challenge.Volunteering is good for the health. My parents are super active in their community....hope to cross paths with your team again.  Thanks....mike

Recherche d'Entrelacs

Merci encore.

Good evening to all,

As most of you know, the search of Entrelacs ended this evening.  Unfortunately, the woman wasn’t found but new elements in the investigation make me hope.

My email is intended to tell you how much police officers appreciated your cooperation. They mentioned it to me on several occasions.  They have greatly appreciated your professionalism and your endurance.  I also told them your appreciation for the collaboration effort.  This operation will forge links with the police and you have helped increase our credibility. Mr. Santerre, search coordinator, was on his first research with volunteers and he told me that it will make sure that we have deployed more rapidly.

On your behalf, I have also thanked Mr. Jean-Pierre Tremblay from Sécurité civile and people from the city hall for their excellent logistical support. You know that I am the first to express my dissatisfaction but I really have the impression that you have contributed to the cause of volunteers.  If you have any suggestion, let me know, I will address them to Cpt Cayer.

Thank again

Salutations,

SergenSergent Sébastien Hébert #3779

Snow Storm
Hi!
I just want to say a special thank you to the Pointe-Claire volunteer
Rescue Squad who came to my help last Saturday - in the middle of the
night - in the middle of the snowstorm.
I can't tell you how surprised I was at the prompt response (I had
been on hold with the CAA for over an hour) and how cheerful and
helpful the two guys were. They had the van, which was partly
blocking the street, safely back in the driveway in no time and
advised us to 'stay home'!
Please pass on my thanks to the guys who gave up their Saturday night
to help people in distress.

Downed Tree

I would like to express my appreciation to the City of Pointe Claire and, in particular, to the volunteers at the Rescue Unit.

Recently, a tree on my property was blown over at a 45 degree angle and threatened the roof of my neighbour’s house.  Within half an hour of my phone call to the Public Security Department, four volunteers from the Rescue Unit were in my back yard working on the problem.  The tree was secured and then skillfully cut so that no damage was caused to either property.

I cannot tell you how impressed I was with the professionalism, team spirit and kindness of this team of volunteers. They even left me a mini chair carved out of my tree. Then, the following day, Councillor Jacques Labbé visited my home to ensure everything was under control.

Having such wonderful support services is just one of the many reasons why Pointe Claire is, in my opinion, an outstanding place to live.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Cunnison
